Ventilators are used by EMS to mechanically breathe for a patient who is unable to do so, or who is unable to breathe sufficiently. Ventilators are used in conjunction with a circuit to deliver oxygen to a patient. In some cases, an optional filter may also be used. Breathing machines are available in a wide range of sizes from portable or even disposable designs that are fully powered by the use of a gas cylinder. Ventilator circuits are available in sizes for adults and pediatrics in order to deliver the right levels of oxygen to different patients.
